Rescue
robots are effective for many reasons. To begin with, rescue robots
are the fast response units in case of a disaster. In the event of a
disaster, every minute makes a difference. A minute is the hairline
between life and death. We are not able to respond as fast as a tiny
robot by reasons of the conditions in a disaster. To illustrate, we
can take a look at İzmit Earthquake. 17. 127 innocent people died in
that disaster. Many victims had to be on the razor’s edge under
wreck. Unfortunately most of them lost their lives in consequence of
the slow response team. As the team was searching the survivors,
there weren’t any high tech equipment available. They had to yell
in hope of hearing a survival. However, if there had been any kind of
these robots, maybe many of victims would be alive today. In the Soma
example, absence of these rescue units caused many casualties. In
that event, no news could be obtained from the explosion area. If we
had had tiny robots, we could have obtained the vital information and
provided the way out. Secondly, these robots have much more
resistance to damages than we can take. For fire accidents, there are
robots which can endure up to 200 degrees. Also, we can’t dive as
deep as robots can dive. There are micro robots that are able to get
in rat holes. Even we send them to other planets for scientific
purposes. The third reason is gathering and distribution of
information. In the course of disaster, working in harmony is a key
of success, yet in such a situation, it is a hard process. In a
building, while medical unit tries to get wounded people,
infrastructure officers search for gas and electric checkpoints to
prohibit a possible explosion after an earthquake. It is possible to
get all of them done with a one tiny robot or drone. As robot gives
information about infrastructure, drone can detect survivors. All in
all, rescue robots have useful capabilities in due course of a
disaster.
